This unique tool allows thickness measurements of stringed instruments to be made without disassembly. The small counter-magnet is passed through the instruments f-hole and follows the gauge around every edge and curve, allowing the exact thickness to be measured at any place on the body. Accurate to within 0.1 mm, calibrated for making measurements while holding the gauge in a vertical position. Quick and easy to use, with no risk of damaging even the most sensitive varnishes. Ideal for the study of old instruments, locating old crack repairs, making sound adjustments, etc. Comes in a protective case. Magnetic Thickness Caliper - Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Prepare the area. Clean the surface of your instrument. Dirt or wood dust can skew your results.
  • Place the internal magnet. Drop the loose magnet inside the object through your F Hole or sound hole.
  • Connect the gauge. Place the external gauge on the outside surface. Move it until you feel the magnets snap together.
  • Take your measurement. Once you are at the location of measurement, make sure that your wand is flush against the surface and held still.  Slowly pull up the top handle and listen for a distinct click as the magnet releases. Read the indicator line on the side of the tube to read your results. You will want to repeat 2 more times to make sure that the results are correct. You will then move to your next area to measure.

Pro Tips for Accurate Readings

  • Hold the Wand at a 90-degree angle from your work and make sure the tip is perfectly flush when measuring.
  • Avoid bass bar/braces: The magnet can jump over internal wooden support bars. Move slowly around these areas to prevent the pieces from disconnecting.
  • Store safely: Keep the two magnets separated by a thick piece of cardboard when stored. If they snap directly together, they can crack or chip. Do not drop your magnet, it can change the strength over time.
  • Keep away from metal: Keep the tool away from steel tables, metal parts, or electronics. External metal will ruin the accuracy of the internal magnetic field.
